In earlier times a man had one wife who lived in the established residence or chief house, and this place was known as the su'ura. He also had many other women whom he kept in the household as workers and concubines. This he took up or dismissed as he pleased. He also carried on as many promiscuous affairs with women whom he brought home, as he pleased. There were merely nightly arrangements. |

Prostitution as such did not exist in Rotuma. Women who were outright morally lax and known to consort with any man who wished them were called ferfere or roh'rohi. This seems to mean ill-behaved or bad women--those who did not conform to custom. | ||||||
