Alfred Ralifo was born in
September 1976 to Sarote and Nofaga Ralifo in Noa'tau, Rotuma. Along
with his twin brother Susau, he is the youngest of seven children. He
is a biology and chemistry
teacher at Nadroga Navosa Provincial High School in Nadroga.
"Art is just a hobby for me although I have been painting
and drawing since high school. I use a
lot of different media for creating my artwork, but the only ones that
I have exhibited are the ones drawn from ink on paper. I volunteer
as an artist for Fiji Office of the World Wide Fund for Nature
and the National Trust of Fiji. I was not really serious about my artwork
until last year (2006) when I first exhibited at the Melanesian Arts
Festival and had all my pieces sold on the first day of the exhibition.
From then onwards I finally had the courage to start exhibiting. Fup'akiag
ne 'Agero (below) was the winning piece in the indigenous arts
category for the 2007 Fiji National Arts Exhibition. It was inspired
by a Rotuman legend which tells how angels spilled sand from
two baskets to form the island of Rotuma. Some of the others, including
the driftwood art pieces, I created and auctioned off for the National
Trust of Fiji membership drive that was held at the British High Commision
Residence in September 2007."
Alfred, along with
some other volunteers, is participating in LajeRotuma's School Eco
Camp on Rotuma, where he will use his science and arts background to
encourage young artists on the island to develop their talents using
naturally found resources.
