Ravai Fatiaki gets Rugby contract

by Emoni Narawa

AIR Pacific Fiji Warriors utility player Ravai Fatiaki will soon join English rugby powerhouse Saracens after an impressive performance during the International Rugby Board Pacific Rugby Cup competition.

The Rotuman this year is a rejuvenated player after sustaining an ankle injury last year and was a key member for Sam Domoni's Warriors side to the Australian and New Zealand series.

Ravai will join Flying Fijians Kameli Ratuvou and Michael Tagicakibau after talks are finalised.

Southern Hemisphere sports director Alistair Trotman told Times Sport that they had approached Fatiaki.

"Mine was just an initial approach to meet him. I have no particular club in mind. He was recommended by a Fijian official," Trotman told Times Sport.

Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit manager Talemo Waqa said talks were underway to secure Fatiaki's contract.

"Nothing is confirmed yet but yes there are discussions underway. Fatiaki's contract is up to him and his agent but we will just issue his international release," Waqa said.

He said they would not want to reveal more on the talks as things were yet to be finalised before Fatiaki puts pen on paper.

The 24-year old made his debut for the Flying Fijians during the Pacific Nations Cup in 2009.

Fatiaki missed selection last year after sustaining an ankle injury during a national trial.

He featured prominently for Tailevu in the provincial rugby playing alongside Flying Fijians scrumhalf Nemia Kentale.

The former Lelean Memorial School under 19 started at outside centre during the Fiji Warriors 21-14 victory over Tonga A at Lautoka's Churchill Park over the weekend.
