Rotumans celebrate day with sporting activities

By Venina Rakautoga

THERE was a big turnout at this year's Rotuman Sports Day at the Suva Grammar Schools grounds in Suva.

Six teams; Sarafui, Satarua, Rae'esea, Granville, Mairo and Maliha featured at this year's tournament.

Fiji Rotuman Sports Council vice-president Rupeni Fonmanu said the aim of the tournament was to help develop and expose talent among their young people.

"Our main aim is to expose some talents from our young people," said Fonmanu.

Sports that were played ranged from rugby union, touch rugby, volleyball and netball.

"The whole day is about Rotumans catching up and we have our families, brothers and sisters from the West who have come in and joined us in Suva.

"This only happens once a year, so it's a good day for the family and for extended families to meet and enjoy the day.

"It is not easy to bring a team together. It takes time and there are also costs that come with it.

"We thank the committees of the different teams for preparing for this and also fundraising, so we commend everyone for their commitment."

The Rotuman Sports Day will continue tomorrow.
