National Swimming Competition has been undertaking in Secondary Schools over past few years now and this year Rotuma High School reassured Holistic Education to students, with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Aitu, the school was able to send four students over to Viti Levu.
Rotuma High School Swim Team consists of four male students and their event is listed as follows:
Attending the competition was an eye opener to our students; for it is the first time for our school to take part in such Competition and also the lone school representing the Eastern Division in the Competition. Attending the competition in Suva didn't deprive the boys from their studies since they attended Dudley High School for the few weeks we were there. The competition took place at the Aquatic Centre in Laucala on the 31st May and 1st June, 2019. Boys were able to adapt quickly to the Suva climate, compared to the island which is really hot and another challenge that the boy's faced was getting into the pool. We were given opportunities to train at three pools one was at Olympic Pool, Aquatic Centre in Laucala and also at the USP pool with the help of Mr. Itu Kamea (Zimran's Dad-a swimming instructor at USP).
The boys took part on the second day of the competition which was on the 1st of June, wasn't able to grab any of the first three position but their time recorded really improved from their qualified time. It was a great experience to the boys since they were able to witness different students took part in different events from free style to backstroke to butterfly and some other events. For the competition next year, a club is required to pass on the knowledge and experience. We hope to take more swimmers next year for more experience. Acknowledgement goes out to Mrs Trisha Dunn and the two ladies Mrs Jieni Elaisa and Mrs Kelly Finiasi for their continuous support in training the boys. And all the Rotumans in Suva for the visitation and hospitality showed. Acknowledgement also goes out to the Principal of Dudley High School for allowing us to attend his school while we were in Viti Levu and also to Mr and Mrs Aitu for taking their time out in training the team in the island and contributing to a success in creating a swimming club for Rotuma High School. And lastly to God almighty for protection and guidance in the three weeks spent in Suva. Vinaka Kinisimere Likutabua (Teacher-In-Charge) Some photos taken during the trip
