Filipe Makrava, 12 March 2026, tribute to Dr. John Fatiaki

Today, we pause to acknowledge this man whose quiet service will long be remembered here in Rotuma. He is known among our people not for loud words or public praise, but for humility, dignity, and faithful commitment to the welfare of the Hanua.

He has walked among us as a servant of the people, giving freely of his time, his knowledge, his resources, and his networks for the betterment of Rotuma.

Though he possessed every means to retire comfortably and enjoy a peaceful life elsewhere, he chose instead to remain close to the land, kainaga, and his home. In doing so, he has demonstrated a spirit of service that reflects the deepest values of our island traditions: humility, responsibility, and care for one another. We have quietly observed his efforts in recent years as he lends his presence and support to matters concerning the Rotuma Island Council. At a time when our RIC faces many challenges and questions of governance, transparency, confidence, capacity, corruption, knowledge, diplomacy skills, and its inability to think independently and beyond the DO, and the delayed political channels that hinder the island's key development needs.

For more than two decades, this well-known yet modest figure has contributed quietly to the community without ever boasting about his work. While voices from outside continuously speak with criticism about the island's struggles, he has chosen to respond not with words but with meaningful action.

Through his own initiative, without any expectations or returns, he has offered free services and resources to help restore and maintain the surroundings of some of the homes left vacant, clearing the vines and overgrowth that slowly reclaim the land in his community. He has extended assistance to the elderly in the community, recognizing their needs and offering his support with generosity and respect.

Our children, too, have benefited from his kindness. The local primary school has received renovations freely, strengthening the place where the next generation of Rotumans begin their journey in learning. Community halls and churches, the pavilion, have also been cared for through his efforts.

Beyond these acts of service, his contributions have also created job opportunities for more than five young and courageous families who have chosen to remain on the island and build their lives here. These families face many realities: underdevelopment, limited essential services, the very expensive Fatogia, the chaos of being judged as a custodian of the land by outsiders, and the rising cost of living. Yet through his support, they are able to stand firm and continue contributing to the life of the community here.

Such service reminds us of an enduring truth of our heritage: that leadership is not measured by status or recognition, but by the willingness to give back to the Hanua and to serve one's people with humility and perseverance.
