The sa'aitu were a company of gods who travelled about together. When a great many fowls cackled at the same time at midday - it was because they had sa'aitu. If people were walking along the road and a company of travelling villagers came onto the sa'aitu, they would know it by a hot wind striking them. They would turn into the side of the road and let the sa'aitu pass without collision. | ||||||

The sa'aitu were the ancestors of Tokaniua's family. When they passed it was like the noise of the wind. The sa'aitu were also said to be those souls not eaten in tofataua 'oroi "of Tokaniua's family". The sa'aitu went with the Oinafa men to war, and that is why they were so strong. 'Atuas travelled about together in a big travelling company, known as sa'aitu. All men who died uncircumcised joined this company. (Another informant said "All women who died in childbirth".) The big company had no other men or women in it. In time of war, the sa'aitu used to help the victorious armies. | ||||||

Sa'aitu - a crowd went about continually to get men to take to 'oroi. All persons who got into trouble, quarrels over land, possessions, in war etc., if the sa'aitu got hold of such they would take him away quickly. The sa'aitu took people who were not well cared for by their friends, also those who did not live a good life. When they do, it is told where they are taken by toak'aitu. Whether eaten or not, and if not they become sur ne' aitu. Eaten souls go with sa'aitu. They also believe that persons who die suddenly are sa'aitu. Sa'aitu tell thru tu'ura where souls are they catch. | ||||||
