From Fiji Times (7 May 2024) 2024 Coca-Cola Games | Lifetime memory for Rotuma lad
Jono Thompson, a 19-year-old from Rotuma, left a lasting impression at the Coca-Cola Games 2024 with his remarkable performance in the senior boys shot put event. Despite it being his inaugural and final appearance at the prestigious event, Thompson displayed exceptional grit and determination, securing a commendable sixth place. “The greatest challenge I went through to prepare was getting up early and doing very hard training,” Thompson said. Undeterred by the obstacles, Thompson pushed himself to the limit, acknowledging the unwavering support of his parents as a driving force behind his success. “My parent’s really pushed me and was my support and that was really what kept me going,” he says. While Thompson fell short of clinching a podium finish, he remained grateful for the opportunity to compete on such a grand stage. “Even though I didn’t get the top three positions, I am grateful I came this far.” As he bids farewell to the Coca-Cola Games, Thompson imparts valuable advice to aspiring young athletes. “This is my first time here at the Coca-Cola games, and my advice to young athletes is to keep going and start at a young age, so that you get used to the training.”
