The United States Government has provided a study opportunity for a Fijian Police Officer through the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police (PICP) in a bid to strengthen exchanges and experiences between US and Asia-Pacific region security officials.

The Deputy Divisional Police Commander West (DDPC/West) Superintendent of Police (SP) Aisake Kafoa has been selected to undertake a strategic studies course focusing on operational and tactical aspects of security at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS) in Hawaii.

The opportunity supported and funded by the United States Government is an outcome of discussions held by the PICP Executive Leaders Team in Sydney, Australia in February 2020.

PICP Chair and Fiji's Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said the training is tagged at the strategic level where senior officers as decision makers are able to strengthen capacity and networking among security decision and policy makers throughout the region.

The PICP Chair said the Executive Team will render support to member countries who wish to take up similar opportunities provided by the US Government as key regional security partners.

The DKI APCSS provides a focal point where national officials can gather to exchange ideas, explore pressing issues and achieve a greater understanding of the challenges that shape the security environment of the Indo-Pacific region.

SP Kafoa who hails from Malhaha, Rotuma said, "I am looking forward to the learning and sharing of experiences with regional and international security officials".

"The strategic studies will look at the operational and tactical security concerns and my area of focus will be Community Policing, and i am looking forward to building relations with regional decision and policy makers and learning best practices that will assist in our efforts here at home".

SP Kafoa will depart for the first phase of his 6-week course in Hawaii tomorrow morning.
